A WOMAN who suffered a sexual assault attack at the hands of a serial rapist has claimed she was sacked for taking too many sick days in the run up to his trial.

In November last year he was jailed for nine years, with the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, having to provide harrowing evidence during the trial.

She worked at the HMRC for more than two years, and says she made her bosses aware of the impending court case.

However she claims they ignored the stress which the ordeal and the impending trial was putting on her. The HMRC denies this and declined to comment.

Speaking to the Daily Record, she said: “The attack has affected me and my partner very badly – we have really struggled to deal with it.

“At the start of last year, I was told I would have to give evidence at Okwara’s trial in November.

“I was very worried about it and my health and work suffered even more.

“I told my line manager about the case and the effect it was having on me – something the HMRC are now denying.

“I don’t think I’ve been treated fairly and I’m seeking legal advice about my options.”

She said the attack left her considering taking her own life.

Okwara, 45, denied sexual assaulting the woman and raping two others between 2004 and 2012.

This forced his brave victims to come to court and provide disturbing evidence about the sex attacks in front of Okwara.

HMRC bosses claimed the woman had taken 79 days sickness absence in the 12 months up to September 2017, and claim that she “did not advise her absences may be linked to the serious sexual assault”.
